Glad to hear you “can’t put down the book!” As for the Shaker men’s hairdo, a search for “Shaker Elder Henry Blinn” will yield some very nice mullets. The bangs are cropped short and the back is kind of wispy or curly, depending on the natural state of the Shakers’ hair. Enjoy the Shaker sites! Warmly, IW

I am reading The Great Divorce right now. Can’t put it down! This information about Eunice Chapman is entirely new to me. As a student of history, I can visualize much of what you depict, but can not envision the male’s Shaker haircut. Can you steer me to a book or site in which I can see it? I, too appreciate the different voices you represent in your narrative. I live in southwestern Vermont, and plan a foray into the Albany area to visit Shaker sites. I’ve already visited Hancock Shaker Village. Thank you much.

I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed the book! One of the things I tried hardest to do was to balance narration and history and the various perspectives in the story– so your comment is particularly heartening to hear. Keeping my fingers crossed about the film!

One of the best books I’ve ever read. The historic balance and multiple viewpoints were beautifully and brilliantly done. It needs to be on film. Great job and I wish you the best.
